SAINSBURY'S: If You're Proud, Label it!

This supermarket giant proudly claims that all of their pigs are gassed to death, a practice they claim is "the most humane method of slaughter for pigs."

If their CEO, Simon Roberts, is really so proud that 100% of Sainsbury’s pigs are gassed to death, then let’s see some transparency. Tell your shoppers the truth, instead of hiding behind a smokescreen of ‘high welfare’ propaganda. Add a label onto all of your British 'pork' products that states: "100% of Sainsbury’s ‘pork’ comes from pigs gassed to death."

Dear Simon Roberts, CEO of Sainsbury's,

According to Sainsbury’s own Animal Health & Welfare Report, 100% of pigs in its ‘British pork’ supply chain are killed in gas chambers.

Sainsbury's states that gas killing is "the most humane method of slaughter for pigs," and highlights that none of its pigs are slaughtered using electrical or percussive methods. The company also claims that all animals are treated "humanely and with respect."

If Sainsbury's is confident enough to defend gas chamber slaughter as a welfare-positive system, then they should be transparent about it. Currently, the public has no idea.

In a recent YouGov survey commissioned by Animal Justice Project, 9 out of 10 (88%) people could not identify the most commonly used method for stunning and killing pigs in the UK. Consumers are unaware that what they are eating died in a gas chamber, having suffocated to death.

We are calling on Sainsbury’s to place the following statement on all of its ‘pork’ products: “100% of Sainsbury’s ‘pork’ comes from pigs gassed to death.”

Around 90% of pigs in the UK are killed in gas chambers. Pigs are lowered into enclosed chambers and exposed to gas before they suffocate, lose consciousness and die. This is a national scandal and it’s being hidden from public scrutiny.

The UK Government is now considering replacing carbon dioxide (CO₂) with argon, but pigs would still be killed in gas chambers. Different gas. Same chamber.
If Sainsbury's truly believes gas chamber slaughter represents ‘high welfare,’ then it should have no objection to informing customers.

The company proudly labels products with information about sourcing, nutrition and farming standards. We believe customers should also be told how the animals were slaughtered. Transparency should not stop where discomfort begins.

We call on Sainsbury's to:
1. Publicly acknowledge the welfare concerns associated with gas chamber systems and commit to reviewing their continued use within Sainsbury's supply chain.
2. Label all of their British ‘pork’ products with “100% of Sainsbury’s ‘pork’ comes from pigs gassed to death,” given their firm stance on calling gas systems "the most humane method of slaughter for pigs".

Consumers have a right to make informed choices. If pigs are gassed to death, shoppers should be told.
