Dear The Rt Hon Angela Eagle MP, Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs,

I am calling on you to act urgently in the best interests of the public by removing Tim Smith CBE – Non-Executive Chairman of Cranswick plc – from his roles on the Food Strategy Advisory Board and the Food & Drink Sector Council. His dismissal from both positions is imperative. This is on grounds of incompetence, law breaking within his company, and a complete disregard for animals by Cranswick, whose interests Tim represents.

Animal Justice Project (AJP) has compiled damning evidence throughout 2024 and 2025 showing why representatives of this law-breaking company should not be advising the UK Government. The Food Strategy Advisory Board exists to guide the UK Government’s ‘Plan for Change’ in shaping food policy, while the Food and Drink Sector Council focuses on the future of food and sustainability. It is vital that Tim Smith is replaced by someone who is not prioritising profit margins, share prices and the expansion of pig farming.

Pig farming is a broken industry where suffering is systemic, leading to devastating consequences for animals, people, and the environment. Government advisory boards must not be occupied by representatives of companies that demonstrate extreme negligence and disregard for animals, as detailed below:

1. Incompetence: An undercover worker in Northmoor Farm in Lincolnshire, one of Cranswick’s pig breeding facilities, captured illegal piglet ‘thumping’, excruciatingly painful mutilations, violent outbursts from Cranswick staff and botched killings. These were not isolated incidents but routine practices deeply embedded in the facility’s daily operations. Tim Smith’s chief concern is Cranswick’s growth; he cannot be relied upon because of his lack of impartiality and accountability.

2. Widespread Lawbreaking: AJP found illegalities across several Cranswick sites. They documented widespread untreated hernias which led to cannibalism and immense suffering at Somerby Top Farm. Lame pigs and those with ruptured hernias were loaded for slaughter, breaching UK Government legislation. Piglet ‘thumping’ and immense levels of suffering was also documented at Mere Farm.

3. Systemic Malpractice and a Lack of Accountability: Following AJP’s investigation into Northmoor Farm, Cranswick stated: “Since May, we have been implementing major changes across all of our farming businesses to address the challenges raised within the footage.” Yet, AJP’s subsequent investigation at Mere Farm documented further incidents of illegality, after their Independent Review had begun. Despite Cranswick’s assurances, and widespread media condemnation, they are still flouting the law.

I call on you to take swift and decisive action without delay by removing Tim Smith from government advisory boards. Meaningful progress cannot be achieved while advisory bodies are dominated by those who embody the very problems they are tasked with addressing. The future of food and farming must be shaped around phasing out pig farming altogether, and not dictated by the vested interests of those who profit from its continuation.
